Critical Mass, Sept 2001 |

It looked early on as though it would be a very small mass, people only started arriving in numbers at about 5:45 or so. In a reversion to the old formula (take 200 cyclists, add chaos and mix vigorously) we had a published route but it was for next month, taking us to the bush dance in Petersham. So we had no route, and some of the traditional leaders were away (Mark and Gabe). I did the welcome bit, mostly a wee rant about my bike being stolen. Then I tried to find someone to "lead" the ride. We started following Ken, going to a pub somewhere in the end. That lasted to somewhere down Riley St, when Ken and Rossco went straight and the mass went left. After that it was your more typical chaos mass, where we decided at each corner where we would go. Rossco got a bit wound up about that, but the rest of us survived. We went past the front of Central then down George St for the obligatory bike lift in front of town hall. Then over to Chinatown and most people went home pretty much immediately. Me and Ken had dinner there, as did a few others. A pretty good night mass I think - about 100-150 riders, some reasonable enthusiasm, but not a huge amount of energy.
