Critical Mass Sydney ride the Harbour Bridge 2007

Phuong's delightfully pink frock. Numbers were looking good even before the 6pm official start time, and given Sydney's traditional "half an hour late is on time" behaviour, that's not bad. Fiona promoting the bicycle film festival. Films started just after Mass finished, so most of the people who went en masse were late to the first screening. The usual congestion just after the start when we hit the first lights here and want to turn right. ...resolved by using the spare lanes on the other side of the road :) Highracer that I haven't seen round Sydney before. Bubbles! There were two motorbike cops who were better than usual but still a PITA with their insistence on constantly zooming through the mass. Stuck in traffic! This year we managed to avoid the Cahill Expressway which is very fast and direct but not really the point IMO. So we wandered back across George St and onto the bridge at Kent St. First time we've managed that since the cops got involved AFAIK. Overall the cops were very laid back this year, much "guiding from the rear" and a fair bit of supervising-while-chatting. Which is all good. Usual story here - the front of the mass has taken off and rushed ahead so we get a fairly strung out group. But that's ok, it only takes about 5 corkers to block all the bridge approaches. Bikes as far as the eye can see! Great time to be doing the bridge climb! And down again. North Sydney noodle markets... or not. There was nothing there. Someone definitely needs to remind them that we're here every year. Mini-mass back into the CBD for the bike film festival. Choke point is the steps up onto the cycleway across the bridge. Form a queue and climb stairs on a cycleway? we are protected. for some reason I'm thinking "we are defective" by the Thompson Twins but maybe that's just a bad 80's flashback. an hour ago we were over to the right going onto the bridge. Motorists are not going much faster than we were. Solar powered LED ropelights on the bikes are pretty, at least once it gets dark.
