Liberals Campaign Launch

Email Moz

A couple of hundred protestors turned out to the Liberal campaign launch for the NSW state election largely due to Howard being booked to speak at it. Nukes and peace mostly, including a few veterans for peace complete with medals and attitude. I was somewhat impressed that when the blue gang brought out their horses the vets were keen to stay in the front line, despite the risk. But no violence eventuated.

A photo of Philip Ruddock, our Federal Minister for Concentration Camps and Domestic Terrorism. What arriving Liberal supporters had to look at as they prepared to run the gauntlet. A simple message from The Greens. This didn't impress some people. Geniveve Rankin, a Sutherland Councillor and anti-nuke activist. The entranceway to the venue - cops in suits, then private security, then a bag search, then a metal detector wand, then presumably more security inside the hall. It's the most extreme security I've seen for a while, possibly second only to the WTO. A line of happy coppers defending the Liberals from the mob. We've changed from the elite chardonnay socialists to the mob now that 80% of the population oppose the war. Babies against the war. There was a newborn peace fairy, but she didn't want her photo taken. Umbrellas against the war. It rained... Not everyone was convinced that it was worthwhile. There were a number of veterans of old wars protesting against the latest one. Dave Sweeney spoke really well against the war. But the Howard puppet didn't seem to want to hear. Dave is the ACF Nuke campaigner. Before the real Howard finally arrived and scuttled up the side entrance to hide in the hall. Nary a word for his dedicated Australian subjects. There was a lot of "NO WAR" chanting... Round the back of the hall was a pile of Police busses, a bunch of dogs and even more barriers. We had Police horses, Police in suits, Police in uniforms, Police in blue overalls, Police with dogs, you name it. About the only thing missing was the Police We were kept a safe distance away form the actual hall where the launch was. The Democrats are still around. Nice cartoon. The Greens placard is there for modesty reasons. Honest. Nat (Sutherland Council nuke campaigner) talks to Tanya Pliberseck (ALP Federal MP). Kerry Nettle (Greens Senator) being interviewed by the ABC (link to a great article... since expired) Sister Susan O'Connell speaking after the rain stopped. The Greens were out in force.
