DIMIA Protest

Email Moz

A national day of action on Wednesday 28 May at DIMIA offices around the country to launch the National Anti-Deportation Alliance.

The 28-day deadline for Iranian detainees to accept the "voluntary" repatriation has expired at Villawood and will do so at Baxter very soon. A representative from the Iranian embassy has visited Baxter and Port Headland to further intimidate and frighten people into accepting the deal. He stated that if they were forcibly deported they would never get an Iranian passport!

About 30 people turned up for the protest. The focus was mainly on proposed deportations to Iran. Ian talking about how two brothers who were deported recently to Iran have struck problems - one has been "disappeared", the other has gone into hiding despite assurance from our govt that he's not in any danger. Francis Kaye from the Uniting Church speaking on the need for cross-religious linkages on issues like this. Security was obvious, but not terribly threatening. Well, compared to Baxter, anyway. Fasheed, an Iranian refugee speaking about the trade links between the Oz and Iran governments, and how that seems to be linked directly to our willingness to send people back to be killed in Iran. Guy from Refugee Action. Passports to your left, DIMIA security to your right. A former guest at Villawood detention centre talking about his experiences.
