TWS Southern Forest Weekend

Email Moz

Clare from The Wilderness Society organised to take a bunch of us city slickers for a look at the SE forests in NSW. We had an interesting time and learnt lots, and met some of the local people. More excitement will surely follow.

Travelling down in the van. Urrgh. It's morning. Intro talk about the plans. Group photo. World Environment Day coming up soon. Heidi talks about the forest harvesting stuff. Some trees are just felled and left. Usually larger trees that will be "past maturity" next time they log this area. leaving Bodulla State Forest moving into Dampier State Forest across the Turos River. Note that all the fauna features are next to roads. Almost as though the survey was done by driving around. Andrew Wong from TWS Canberra with Tony. Warning: you can't learn how to do this by looking at the photos. If you already know, this should be a vaguely useful reminder. Note full-on arborists harness. Climbing using a 2:1 over the branch and a single prusick. See - easy! Using legs to lift with - feel holding the rope. This is easier with boots than sandshoes... I was wearing sneakers... Teaching how to prusick. Sitting in it is the easy part. Some camped on the road, others in among the trees. Note bivvys bottom right. Trying to get Sooty to take the left over food. Clare with her forest tiara. Up at the lookout, Andrew pointing out the various sites. We camped in the centre of the frame. Hamming it up for the video camera. Heidi and elen are putting together a quick doco to use to get funding for bringing city activists down to the forest. Still smiling on the drive home.
