Pedal Prix 2004

I went to the 2004 Pedal Prix at Murray Bend in SA with the TriSled team (called Fastback Racing). Mostly I took photos, but also ran the pits in the middle of the night while Ben slept. I had a good time, and was impressed by how well it all worked - the race organisers too, but most Ben had it down pat, even to having a professional chef!

Highlights - Crashes - 17th - 18th (one big page) - 19th (one big page)

If you have a slow connection or would like larger files for printing I can send you a CD with all of the Pedal Prix photos on it, plus up to 10 full size images for $20. The original images are generally 3000x2000 pixels and approximately 3MB. Email mozphoto@moz.net.nz for more details.

Scrutineering Tagging the Bendigo Youth Racing vehicle Team serious preparing for the race Most of the wheels, most of the time. These things look big but they're surprisingly fast despite that. Practice the night before. He is not juggling flaming torches, because there is a rule against naked flames in the camp. Except smokers, of course. Team photo Practicing the all-important driver change. We could swap drivers in less than ten seconds quite reliably. Still cost us nearly a minute because of the time in the pit lane. The start. The flat-top is from WA, first entry from that side for a while. The back to back tandem. Primary school tandems - the obvious solution for younger kids. They go slowly and erratically for the most part, making them a bit of a challenge to pass at times. Theoretically the slower teams stay to the left of the blue line (right of picture), but this was an ongoing problem. Especially when the wrong-side vehicle is this wide! Keep left! Sometimes that worked perfectly - here there are the fast teams on their side, the slow teams on theirs, it's all working! Traffic! Bouncing off the bales - he kept it on the track, but not by much. The bales cover a nasty open drain that's quite capable of catching a wheel and flipping the trike. Surgery - few trikes finished intact. The other way to change drivers... Serious pit stop - these guys were very fast, very aggressive, and very often in the pits. Our pit chick - sign tells the rider their lap number, last lap time and time in vehicle. Our guys were doing 45-90 minutes in the trike, and after about 10 laps it's easy to lose count. Frost in the morning... we got down to 3 degrees in the pit tent. "Tenacious" with quite a bit of duct tape. Andrew hauling us back into daylight. Half the time I can't tell who's driving in the photos because the lid is on, but here we're rigged for night running (head out because the windscreen fogs up when it's 3 degrees outside and more than 100% humidity). Text on the bottom says "Other Way Up" with an arrow. Yes, that fairing is scraping along the ground. Note the size difference - our toy is noticeably smaller than the others. If you look carefully you can see the duct tape from after the big crash. Inside the fairing looking out - the crumple zone worked but... Not too bad considering it got run head-on into a pole at about 50kph and stopped. The rider got out and towed it back to the pits... Team Serious strikes again.
