Media Release 30 September 2004Thousands of Australians send leaves and letters of 'hope'that Howard and Latham will protect Tasmania's old growthForests Today The Wilderness Society will deliver the last batch of25,000 leaves and 100,000 postcards signed by Australiansall over the country since World Environment Day June 5,calling for the protection of Tasmania's old growth forestsfrom woodchipping. IN MELBOURNE: they will be delivered to Liberal PartyHeadquarters 101 Collins Street at 9.45am and Labor'sCampaign Headquarters 360 King Street West Melbourne at10.45am. The "Trees of Hope" are attached to the outside ofseveral trucks which will first undertake a processionthrough the city. IN SYDNEY: they will be presented to John Howard's Bennelongelectoral office at 230 Victoria Rd, Gladesville at 11am.The "Trees of Hope" will be marched up the street byvolunteers, who will be joined by Quoll and other colourfulcharacters. The "Trees of Hope" will also be presented toMark Latham's electoral office over the next few days. "The "Trees of Hope" banners picture Eucalyptus regnans, theworld’s tallest hardwood trees and are covered in leavessigned by 25,000 Australians as a plea to our politicalleaders to protect Tasmania’s old growth forests." "Australians turned out in their thousands on WorldEnvironment Day to call on John Howard and Mark Latham tointervene and protect Tasmania's old growth forests fromwoochipping. Since then, their call has become a hugegroundswell of support for Tassie's forests, represented bythe last of the 100,000 postcards we are delivering todayand just some of 25,000 leaves that have been signed;" saidNSW Campaign Manager, Francesca Andreoni. Victorian Campaign Manager Gavan McFadzean said, "Theremainder of the 100,000 postcards have been delivered topolitical leaders and candidates in marginal seats aroundthe country over the last couple of months."
